The prodigious 2013 Claret (a 690-case blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot) comes from various AVAs, including Mt. Veeder, Howell Mountain, and of course, Calistoga. Also aged 18 months in French oak, this wine displays compelling creme de cassis notes intermixed with cedar wood, baking spices, blackberry, and hints of mulberries and flowers. The wine has great intensity, a full-bodied, super-duper mouthfeel, and a very long finish of close to 45+ seconds. This is a beauty, with sweet tannin as well as profound depth. Drink it over the next 20+ years.

  • Winemaker Robert Foley began his winemaking career in 1977, working at Heitz Winery before becoming founding winemaker at Markham, where he developed the style of Merlot that helped make the variety a mega-trend in the 1980s. Following his success at Markham, Foley is perhaps best known for his tenure with Pride and Paloma. He still keeps a coterie of clients including School House, Switchback Ridge and Hourglass. He founded Robert Foley Vineyards in 1999 and was named Food & Wine Magazine's Winemaker of the Year in 2007.
