Morlet's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Passionnement is a dark, voluptuous wine. Black cherry, leather, smoke, tobacco and licorice infuse this heady, flamboyant Cabernet Sauvignon. The tannins are relatively soft for a young wine from this vintage, which means the 2013 will drink well with minimal cellaring.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Passionnement comes from Oakville. This is pure Oakville bench Cabernet, with notes of Christmas fruitcake, unsmoked cigar tobacco, cedar wood and creme de cassis. There is a seamless integration of acidity, alcohol, wood and tannin, and the wine is opulent, majestic in the mouth, and very pure and rich. There are only 280 cases of this magnificent, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon which should drink well for 30+ years.

  • California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
