Another medium to full-bodied, lightly textured, elegant effort is the 2013 Perfectionist. Made from 68% Syrah, 17% Mourvedre and 15% Grenache, it shows plenty of Mourvedre savoriness to go with ample red and black fruits, smoked meats and a touch of olive tapenade. Like all of Matt's 2013s, it's seamless and perfectly balanced, with lots to love. Drink it anytime over the coming 8-10 years.

Polished, plump and well-structured, with rose petal, dark raspberry and crushed rock aromas leading to layered flavors of plum, roasted anise and smoky cracked pepper. Syrah, MourvAdre and Grenache."

Opaque ruby. Complex, assertively perfumed bouquet of ripe black and blue fruit liqueur and floral pastilles, with mineral and cola nuances coming up slowly. Sweet, concentrated and expansive on the palate, offering intense blueberry and boysenberry flavors sharpened by juicy acidity. Distinctly suave and seamless wine with wonderful closing focus and persistence and gentle framing tannins. - Josh Raynolds

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
