  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 100

The medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Few and Far Between comes charging out of the gate with intense notes of crushed red and black currants, black cherries and mulberries over a crème de cassis and mincemeat core plus suggestions of baking spices and fragrant earth. Full-bodied, bold and oh-so-decadent, the palate features a very firm, velvety frame with layer upon layer of spiced black berries and a compelling earthy undercurrent, finishing with fantastic length and perfume.

Plump and juicy, with ripe plum, cherry and blueberry flavors. The dense backbone of oak, herb and tannins gives this a sense of power, as well as finesse, structure, charm and length. Drink now through 2032. 450 cases made. — JL

  • California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
