Extravagant aromas of crushed raspberries and boysenberries follow through to a full body with fabulous velvety tannins and a superb finish of exotic fruit and lusciousness. Mesmerizing now but better in 2019.Drink Dates: 2019+Author: James SucklingIssue: Friday, January 15, 2016Vinous | Rating: 98
Once again, the magic of this great Napa Valley vintage comes through in the 2013 St. Eden, a wine that captures all the magic of this great Oakville site. Bright, punchy and deeply expressive, the 2013 exudes class. The tannins are there, but they are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. Seamless, racy and utterly exquisite, the 2013 St. Eden is simply magnificent. This is a fabulous showing.Drink Dates: 2023 - 2038Author: Antonio GalloniIssue: Nov 2017Wine Spectator | Rating: 88
Presents a perky core of dusty blackberry and currant flavors, with shades of mocha, dill and herb. This has room to grow, but for now there are questions about how the tannins will evolve.Author: James LaubeWine Advocate | Rating: 99
The 2013 St. Eden is absolutely mind-blowing, with notes of blackcurrant liqueur and licorice as well as hints of Asian soy and lead pencil. Wonderful fruit that hits the palate with a cascade of glycerin, silky but noticeable tannins, and a big, earthy, rich, full-throttle, majestic finish of close to a minute add to this wine's compelling personality. It should drink well for at least 30-40 years.Drink Dates: 2016 - 2056Author: Robert ParkerIssue: 227

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
