The 2012 Zinfandel Hayne Vineyard (planted in 1953) is a rich, full-bodied beauty that seems more developed and evolved than previous examples of this cuvee.

(15.5% alcohol): Good deep red. Brooding aromas of blackberry, tart cherry stomp, black licorice, caraway seed, violet and spicecake. Silky, broad and dry, with excellent intensity to its red cherry and spice flavors. Not a monster of color or thickness--and a bit inexpressive today--but subtle and nuanced. Spreads out nicely on the back end, showing a firm tannic spine and plenty of depth and medicinal dark cherry reserve for aging. But this going through a sullen stage following the early March bottling.

Deep and jammy, with black cherry and cracked pepper aromas and briary but soft dark plum and smoky beef flavors.

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.

Zinfandel is native to Croatia but today is regarded as California’s signature variety. It is made in a range of styles, the best of which are full-bodied wines with high alcohol and aromas of red and black fruit, dried berry, cardamom, anise, smoke, and black pepper. Look to producers Turley, Martinelli, and Ridge for some of the best examples of California Zin.

Zinfandel’s full body and high alcohol require a strong dish to pair, and curries, spiced barbeque, light meats, and hard cheeses make great choices.
