A very rich and dense red with blueberry and chocolate character. Full-bodied, very silky and refined. Wonderful depth and length. Held back and pretty. Elegance and beauty for a Schrader. Better in 2017.

Schrader's 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon LPV Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard is laced with blueberry jam, cassis, new leather, cloves and violets. Most of the site's inherent minerality has been baked out, either by the vintage or by some of the farming/winemaking choices, and what comes through is a very ripe, oaky Las Piedras with relatively soft contours and plenty of near term appeal. As good as the 2012 is, I am not sure what the point is of making a wine like this in Las Piedras. In fact, Schrader's Las Piedras is one of the least site-specific wines from this vineyard I have tasted. I would give the 2012 a few years to lose some of its baby fat and see what happens.

Starts out bold and assertive, with rich dark berry, cedar and nutmeg flavors, revealing touches of espresso, mocha and melted black licorice. Well-built, tight and persistent, this will benefit from short-term cellaring. Best from 2017 through 2029. 620 cases made.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard LPV is black/ruby, shows lots of charcoal, scorched earth and an almost Graves-on-steroids personality. Deep blueberry and blackberry fruit, a hint of coffee and chocolate are all present in this impressive, very different style of Cabernet Sauvignon from Schrader. This is Clone 337, planted in a St. Helena vineyard.

Sweet, assertive tannins, classic Napa flavors and texture, but amped up to 11. Very good.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
