  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 89

Bold, firm and ruggedly tannic, showing a powerful presence built around a dense core of dark berry, gravelly earth and lead pencil flavors, ending with dry, extracted, chewy tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Best from 2016 through 2028. 500 cases made.

The 2012 Proprietary Red The Bard, a 500-case blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, is meant to showcase the finest Cabernet Sauvignon grapes they access from such great Napa Valley sites as Beckstoffer To Kalon, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane, Fortuna and Weitz. Beautiful notes of pungent baking spices, licorice, melted chocolate, espresso, blackberries and cassis soar from the glass of this ostentatious, flamboyant, classic, locked-and-loaded Cabernet Sauvignon. There is some tannin lurking under the surface, but this majestic superstar behaves as if it wants to be drunk young as well as over the next 15-20 years.

The 2012 The Bard is the deepest and richest of Realm's non vineyard-designate wines. Lavender, violets, smoke, mint, dark spices, plums and blackberry jam meld together in a rich, pliant wine loaded with depth, texture and pure voluptuousness. A powerful, explosive finish rounds things out in this decidedly plush, extroverted wine.

  • Realm Cellars' mission is to produce handcrafted Bordeaux varietals, in limited quantities, from the finest fruit available in Napa Valley.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
