(85% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 2% each petit verdot and carmenere): Full, saturated medium ruby. Very dark, vibrant aromas of blueberry, black raspberry, creme de cassis , fruity bitter chocolate, spices and violet. Densely packed if still a bit youthfully imploded, showing an almost porty primary dark fruit character along with a note of cocoa powder. Ultimately pliant in the mouth, with an enticing balance of sweetness and natural acidity. Finishes with serious, building tannins and a firming mineral note. This should age slowly and gracefully. Strong potential here.

Pleasantly rich, graceful and elegant, with a tapered mix of currant, blueberry and blackberry flavors that are ripe, firm and deep, but not weighty or excessive. A seductive push of black licorice adds dimension. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Carmenere and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2027. 9,000 cases made.

The outstanding 2012 Proprietary Red Blend Quintessa is composed of Bordeaux varietals dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenere. One of the strongest efforts to date from this winery, it possesses a deep ruby/purple color as well as abundant aromas of sweet white chocolate, acacia flowers, and black and red fruits, full-bodied opulence, velvety tannins, and enough acidity to provide freshness and focus. It can be drunk now or cellared for another 10-15+ years.

Very well made, with blackberries, blueberries and the typical Rutherford dusty tannins. It does lack fullness and depth that I expect.

In 2002, Valeria and Agustin Huneeus' dream of the quintessential wine estate - one vineyard that produces one singular estate wine - was realized with the opening of the winery at Quintessa.

Quintessa is truly a "winemaker's winery." The design facilitates a gravity-flow process and a state-of-the-art winery specifically tailored with fermenters and tanks sized to match the diverse blocks in the Quintessa vineyard. Additionally, the winery at Quintessa is outfitted with the latest in winemaking technology. French oak and stainless steel fermenters stand tall along the winery's front wall, providing the winemaking team with a choice of characteristics adding complexity and subtlety to the blend.

Quintessa, like all classic wines of the world, bears the same name as the vineyard from which it is made. The winery's goal is to produce the best expression of this extraordinary vineyard each and every year.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
