  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93

(made from fruit grown in the Giusti, Koplen, Keefer and Kanzler vineyards): Brilliant ruby. A heady, complex bouquet evokes candied dark berries, Asian spices and potpourri, along with a musky herb note and a hint of white pepper. Rich but lively and precise, offering energetic blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that pick up smokiness with aeration. Fine-grained tannins shape the finish, which lingers with strong mineral-driven persistence.

  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 95

Easily the most rich and decadent in the lineup, with sweet oak interwoven through its cassis, black cherry, licorice, ground herbs, flowers and spice-driven aromas and flavors, the 2012 Pinot Noir 4 Barrel is full-bodied, concentrated and layered, with a stacked mid-palate, beautiful overall freshness and a fabulous finish. Despite the overall size and richness here, it stays elegant, lively and fresh, with no hard edges and a seamless feel that carries all the way through the finish. It needs another year or three in the cellar, but will have over a decade of longevity. Rock-star stuff.

Rich and layered, with spice box, creamy oak and firm, well-defined red and dark berry flavors. Touches of mocha, espresso, vanilla and cedar appear on the long, clean finish.

  • Kosta-Browne started its supersonic trek to celebrity status in 1997, when pals Dan Kosta and Michael Browne pooled their restaurant tips and purchased a half ton of Pinot Noir, a manual crusher-de-stemmer and a used barrel. Adding the business and investment-savy Chris Costello gave Kosta Browne the requisite resources to expand into the Pinot force they are today. Fruit is sourced from top-notch vineyards in the Russian River, Sonoma Coast, and Santa Lucia Highlands. Their philosophy is to make Pinots that express intense flavor and the "sweet spot" of their respective vineyards. In addition to their vineyard-designate wines, Kosta Browne also produces two blends: one from the Sonoma Coast and the other from Russian River.
