Presents a raw, edgy, rustic style, with vivid, zesty dried dark berry, forest floor and savory notes. Fans of supersized Cabernets will find this more alluring than those seeking finesse. Drink now through 2025. 392 cases made.

Virtually perfect, and a California verison of Haut-Brion or La Mission Haut-Brion is the absolutely remarkable 2012 Janzen Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Cabernet Sauvignon. There are 250 cases of this prodigious wine, which is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from this site. Loads of scorched earth, burning embers/charcoal, blackberry and blueberry fruit soar from the glass along with some floral notes. Quite full-bodied, it offers sweet tannin, low acidity, and a fleshy, rich finish of close to a minute. The tannins are there, but they are wonderfully sweet and integrated. This is a fabulous effort from the Jenzen family.

  • California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
