The 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz is a good example of this and possesses a powerful, rich and mineral-driven profile with plenty of black cherry and dark fruit, crushed stone, garrigue and pepper on the nose. Saturated purple in color, it is a full-bodied, rich and structured effort that-s loaded with character. Give it a year or three and drink it over the following decade or more. Drink 2016-2027.

Deep ruby. Powerful, intensely perfumed aromas of red and dark berry preserves, incense and lavender, with a piquant mineral topnote. Stains the palate with intense black raspberry and cherry flavors, picking up a darker cassis quality with air. Supple tannins build through the long, sweet, penetrating finish, which highlights the berry note.

  • The exceptional quality and stylistic excellence of this property's wines are due to the dedication, versatility, and forward thinking of both the late Jean-Denis Vacheron (who married the owner's daughter, Sylvie Pouzin) and the current winemaker, Bruno Gaspard. Jean-Denis and Sylvie had taken over from her father, Claude, in 1996. However, in 2002, Jean-Denis was killed in a traffic accident and Sylvie took the reins. Today, with the help of Gaspard as well as oenologist Philippe Cambie, she has catapulted the domaine into the elite echelon of the Southern Rhône. Despite holding only nine hectares of land, the domaine boasts venerable neighbors (Château Rayas and Château de Beaucastel), and its vineyards have elements of the best of both these estates. The rocky-sandy soils provide excellent drainage and impart minerality to these Châteauneuf-du-Papes.
