Bella's least potent Zinfandel is the 2012 Zinfandel Lily Hill Estate (14.6% alcohol). It offers copious quantities of Provencal garrigue-influenced red cherry and black cherry fruit intermixed with earth, pepper and spice. This medium to full-bodied, luscious, heady, sexy Zinfandel should be consumed over the next 4-5 years.

  • Scott Adams released his first Zinfandel from the 1999 vintage in 2001 and the winery became an instant success. Beautifully defined fruit is the hallmark here without the overt heaviness found in many examples of this varietal. I found nothing finer that year and named Bella the best in several year-end categories, most notably "Winery of the Year 2001." The Adams' three distinct vineyards, Belle Canyon, Lily Hill and Big River Ranch are all old vine sources and regularly produce an average of 800 cases each. Belle Canyon, at 340 cases, is the smallest site.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
