A full-tilt Grenache, bold, complex and crammed with personality. Vivid meaty, cracked pepper and licorice aromas lead to rich, somewhat muscular flavors of smoky blackberry and roasted herbs. Hands off for now.

Still in barrel, the 2012 Grenache was nevertheless singing on this occasion. Maybe because it followed the more reserved and austere '11, but it got a big |wow| in the notes and blew me away with its sexy, decadent nose of black raspberries, plums, caramelized meats, charcoal and licorice aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, concentration and mouth filling, with fabulous breadth of fruit and texture, it should knock your socks off on release but have 10-15 years of longevity.

  • Alban Vineyards is a California wine estate producing various Rhone style blends and varietal wine. The winery is located in Edna Valley, near Arroyo Grande in the southern corner of San Luis Obispo County.

Starting in 1985, John Alban planted grapes for other people until he bought an estate in 1989. With a focus on creating wines made from Rhone Valley varieties, Alban became one of the pioneers in the Rhone Rangers movement, and is considered one of the most influential American Rhone producers.

Within a 250-acre (100 ha) area, the vineyard area extends 60 acres (24 ha), and is planted with varieties Syrah, Viognier and Roussanne. Grenache and Roussanne are also sourced from vineyards located in the warmer Paso Robles AVA.

Among the vineyard designate wines produced are the Lorraine Vineyard, Reva Vineyard Syrah and Seymour's Vineyard Syrah. Alban also produces Pandora, a blend of Grenache and Syrah, and a botrytized dessert wine.
