The 2012 Las Posadas Proprietary Red is a massive fruit bomb from that high-elevation vineyard. Forest floor, floral notes, lead pencil shavings, licorice, fruitcake, cedar wood and oodles of black fruits soar from the glass and from the palate of this full-bodied, majestic, multi-layered wine. Like most 2012s, it is really strutting it's stuff. It is still obviously young, but dramatic and flamboyant. This sensational wine should age effortlessly for 25-30+ years.

So much tar with blackberry and blueberry aromas. Perfumed. Black olive. Forest floor. A fabulous Bordeaux blend with complexity and subtlety. Full-bodied yet polished and refined. Incredible length and finish. Wonderful spice. Hard not to drink now. About 300 cases made. March release.

  • If you adhere to the premise that great wine begins in the vineyard, then you have to admire the influence David Abreu has had on the ultra-premium wine industry. His impact began in the 1980s when he founded Abreu Vineyards after graduating from the Viticulture and Enology program at UC Davis. His reputation was enhanced through the success of his vineyard management company, and he became one of the most sought-after viticulture consultants. Famous clients include Blankiet Staglin ColginBryantAraujo and many others. His own wines reflect his expert vineyard management skills and innate ability to translate the grapes' excellence into stunning wine. Abreu also produces a proprietary red blend called Rothwell Hyde.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
