One of my long-time favorites in this range, the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc L'Apres-Midi is gorgeous in this vintage. Citrus, lychee, jasmine, melon, fig, smoke, and pear notes all flesh out in the glass. The 2011 is impeccably layered and balanced from start to finish. Hints of lemon oil and white flowers add brightness on the crisp, bracing finish. The blocked malo style works particularly well here. The 2011 is 95% Sauvignon (one-third Musque) and 5% Semillon. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018.

(includes 3% semillon): Green-tinged gold. Tangerine, poached pear, vanilla and anise aromas are sharpened and lifted by a hint of candied ginger. Supple, sweet and succulent on the palate, with ripe citrus, orchard fruit and melon flavors energized by smoky minerality. Very complex wine, finishing smooth and broad, with outstanding length and lingering smokiness.

Peter Michael's estate vineyards (founded in 1982) are what make his wines truly exceptional. Sugarloaf Ranch sits high above Knights Valley in eastern Sonoma County, and from its rocky volcanic soil come Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Alexander Mountain Estate Vineyard, above Alexander Valley, provides additional Chardonnay. All Peter Michael wines are site-driven single vineyard bottlings, whether from the estate or the limited sourced appellations. The line-up of estate wines is supplemented by a Pinot Noir from Pisoni Vineyard called "Le Moulin Rouge."
