(14.8% alcohol; vinified with 20% whole clusters; 75% new oak): Good bright, dark red. Aromas of black raspberry, cola, bitter chocolate and pungent brown spices; if the Five Barrel is Chambolle, this is Vosne. Creamy and bracing thanks to bright acidity, with concentrated dark berry flavors offering an exciting combination of perfume and power. Wonderfully generous, strong pinot noir with palate-staining persistence and terrific lift. I haven't yet tasted other 2011 pinots from Santa Lucia Highlands but if this wine is any indication this was a superb vintage in this area.

Located south of San Francisco, Patz and Hall has long produced a wine from the famous Pisoni Vineyards, and their 2011 Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard (400 cases) offers up perfumed raspberry and floral notes intermixed with hints of dusty, loamy soil, roast beef, black currants and black cherries. With a lovely, full-bodied mouthfeel, it carries its 14.8% natural alcohol very elegantly. Drink it between now and 2019.

  • Since 1988, Patz & Hall has set a standard for Chardonnays and Pinots that epitomize poise and finesse. The winery is a partnership of four individuals - Donald Patz, James Hall, Anne Moss and Heather Patz - all of whom are veterans in the production of fine wine. Between them, they have made wine at Flora Springs, Honig Cellars, Far Niente, Marimar Torres, Spring Mountain and Cain Vineyard. They source from regions ranging from the Santa Lucia Highlands to Mendocino, and prime areas in between. The wines skillfully maintain the intricate and graceful dance between substance and balance, power and elegance - the key characteristics of world-class Pinot Noir.
