Deep ruby-red. Sexy, exotic perfume of raspberry, blueberry, mocha and woodsmoke. Densely packed flavors of dark berries, flowers and minerals are nicely framed by harmonious acidity. Really wonderfully fat for 2011 cabernet, finishing with serious broad, ripe tannins and outstanding persistence. I don't think I would have identified the vintage here, as this is a real outperformer. And the crop size was good too, as this high-altitude vineyard flowered after the early June rains.

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard is shaping up to be one of the great wines of the year. Firm Howell Mountain tannins provide the backdrop as this vivid, riveting Cabernet Sauvignon opens up in the glass. Blue and black fruit, asphalt, violets and spices all take shape in the glass, but the 2011 is above all else a wine of structure and personality. I can hardly wait to taste it again from bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2031.

Consumed at Figaro Bistro. Good wine, but nothing memorable. Worth $150? Nope, worth more like $50.

Howell Mountain provides a true "outpost" for these wines, with rocky soil, cool breeze, and a stunning view. At an altitude of 2,100 feet above the Napa Valley floor, owners Terry and Juli Pringle grow Zinfandel, Cabernet, Petit Sirah, and Grenache, all organically. The debut vintage was the 1998 100% Znfandel, which garnered a 93-point score from The Wine Spectator. Thomas Brown is the full time winemaker, and Ehren Jordan, winemaker at Turley Wine Cellars, consults. A second project, True Vineyard, debuts in 2008 with a Bordeaux blend estate wine.
