The 2011 Richebourg Grand Cru comes from old vines close to Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. It has a broody bouquet but very sophisticated, developing intensity with aeration, building moment by moment. The palate has a sorbet-like freshness on the entry with a curious note of white chocolate. It is well-defined with a hell of a lot of dry extract on the finish that is very long. This is a serious Richebourg that will lighten up as it gets older.

This is aromatically quite similar to the Grands EchAczeaux though there is perhaps even better depth. There is admirable punch, size, weight and concentration to the mid-palate though there is a mildly odd character to the finish that I find difficult to describe other than to say that it is definitely atypical. It's impossible to say whether it will dissipate once the wine is racked and cleaned up but if you can taste first I would do so before committing to quantity. On the plus side this displays superb underlying material so if it does clean up, this should be excellent.

Good full red. Aromas of creme de cassis, musky red berries, spicy oak and smoky minerality (Saouma describes it as |a red version of a black wine|). Plush, dense and classically dry, with deep, sappy red berry and mineral flavors carrying through to a wonderfully vibrant, wild, extremely long aftertaste featuring a distinct saline element. My note should be viewed as provisional, as one of the wine's two components had not quite finished its malolactic fermentation.
