  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 90

Starting out the 2011s and a pretty effort, the 2011 Sangiovese offers bright cherry, underbrush, hints of pepper and plenty of cedar to go with a medium to full-bodied, juicy and lightly textured profile on the palate. It has real Sangiovese character, beautiful purity and at least a decade of longevity.

Velvety, complex and distinctive, with violet and white pepper accents around a focused core of blackberry and coffee, lingering effectively. This has depth and presence.

pepper and oaky nose. Cherry and balsamic taste with a silky tannin. Nice sangiovese effort for not being italian. Probably still a little young.

Gary Figgins, owner-winemaker of this oldest winery in the Walla Walla Valley, turned his winemaking hobby into a career in 1977 after years of amateur experimentation in is cellar. He is respected for being entirely self-educated in winemaking and having an obsessive attention to detail, going so far as to choose specific logs for his barrel staves years in advance. Despite his overwhelming success, total production of his Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, blends, and Riesling remains limited.
