Both the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Blue Line and 2011 Cabernet Franc Blue Line were lighter styled efforts displaying some herbaceousness and austerity. The Cabernet Sauvignon was soft and pleasant and the Cabernet Franc was slightly diluted, but okay. All three 2011 Blue Line cuvees looked to be lush, ripe, gorgeously fruity, pure wines with dense ruby/purple colors, lots of body and glycerin, and, surprisingly, normal alcohol levels. This appears to be a terrific vintage at Hourglass, but even at one year of age, these wines are still dominated by sensational levels of fruit.

An immense, richly flavored effort, with lavish oak cloaked over dense blackberry, mocha, espresso, vanilla and crushed rock notes. Ends with a pleasing push of rich, charming fruit set against a wall of tannins.

Proprietor Jeff Smith has developed Hourglass Cabernet into one of the most anticipated releases each year since its debut in 1997. Winemaker (and Jeff's fellow band mate) Bob Foley gets the most out of this vineyard, named for its location at the narrowest point of the Napa Valley, just north of St. Helena. Production is consistently under 1000 cases.
