(100% sangiovese): Good deep, bright red. Knockout nose combines liqueur-like red fruits, minerals, aromatic herbs and spicy oak. Sappy and suave, with extremely deep red and dark berry, mineral and Oriental spice flavors framed by harmonious acidity. Still a bit youthfully aggressive today, finishing with firm, building tannins and outstanding length. An exceptionally successful Flaccianello; in fact, I predict it will turn out to be one of the top three Chianti-area wines of the 2011 vintage.

The 2011 Flaccianello della Pieve is 100% Sangiovese aged 24 months in new French oak and two months in large oak cask. I'm not sure how Fontodi does it, but this edition of Flaccianello is simply beautiful. It is a seamless expression with lingering tones of red cherry, coffee, spice, truffle and red rose that flow harmoniously into unison. In the mouth, the wine shows great opulence and textural richness that is pushed forward by the stylistic softness of the tannins and the wine's inner freshness. Pretty menthol tones appear on the finish.

Violet, black currant, raspberry and spice aromas and flavors gain intensity as this red builds to a lengthy conclusion. Vibrant and harmonious, this will require some time to shed its well-proportioned tannins. Sangiovese. Best from 2017 through 2030.

  • Located in the picturesque Florentine hillsides just outside the pastoral town of Panzano, Fontodi is the spectacular domain of the Manetti family. The vineyards are located in the valley of the Conca d'Oro (Golden Basin) and enjoy a cool climate and marl-rich soil that gives the fruit a signature high-toned, red cherry profile. The wines are studies in the profound elegance and muted power of the ancient Sangiovese grape. The "Flaccianello" is one of the original Super Tuscans (originated in 1981) that uses 100% Sangiovese from an eponymous single vineyard of superior quality. This is an incredible collectible that represents a seamless juxtaposition of traditional Tuscan flavor and New World richness.
