The 2011 Dominus (86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc) displays a streak of herbaceousness. Tasting the wine one can see the stress this vineyard on the valley floor must have endured with all the fog and botrytis. It is exceptionally well made in this agonizing year for vignerons, exhibiting a dark plum/ruby hue along with notes of sweet Provencal herbs intertwined with red and black currants, loamy soil, underbrush and spice. This medium-bodied 2011 is best consumed over the next 10-12 years.

(86% cabernet sauvignon, 9% petit verdot and 5% cabernet franc): Bright red-ruby. Riper on the nose than the Napanook bottling, offering scents of redcurrant, espresso and bitter chocolate. Sweeter in the mouth as well, showing considerably more fat and attractive floral lift to its flavors of dark berries, herbs, pepper, licorice and spices. Fine-grained and concentrated but still a bit youthfully compact, in need of at least a few years of bottle aging to absorb some of its tannins.

Savory herbs, menthol, smoke and licorice are some of the aromas that open up in the glass in the 2011 Dominus. This is a relatively immediate, expressive Dominus with plenty of near-term appeal. The style is open and succulent for the year, with lovely balance and poise. Crushed rose petals and dried herbs linger in the close. With time in the glass, the 2011 fleshes out nicely. In 2011 Dominus is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc.

Smoke, dried herb, dried currant, tobacco leaf and crushed rock notes give this a strong, assertive personality that veers toward a roasted herb raciness on the finish.

Wonderful aromas of tobacco, currant, berry and mineral. Ink and lead pencil. Full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Lovely texture and freshness. Not the amazing 2010 but excellent. Better in 2015.

Menthol and green pepper on the nose. Full tannins and mouthfeel. We were not in a position to decant but it needed a good 1-2h. This should be good another 15-20y and will continue to improve.

Since its inaugural vintage in 1983, the wines of Dominus Estate have been crafted in a traditional and terroir-driven style by the luminous Christian Moueix of Petrus fame. Unable to pass up the change to make what he called the Haut-Brion of Napa, Moueix came to own the legendary Napanook Vineyard through a partnership with and eventual buyout of Robin Lail and Marcia Smith, the daughters of John Daniel of Inglenook Winery. Moueix eschews irrigation, acidification, and the heavy usage of oak (18 months in French barrels, with only 1/3 new) common amongst his Napa colleagues. The exceptional terroir of Napanook in combination with his skillful viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques have repeatedly resulted in some of the most broadly enjoyable Napa Cabs available and clearly place Dominus in the upper echelon of this genre. Since 1996 the estate has released a second wine called Napanook.
