Tasted blind at the Sauternes 2011 horizontal tasting. The Chateau Doisy-Daene 2011 builds upon its outstanding performance from barrel. It has a powerful bouquet with seductive scents of wild honey, yellow flowers and orange blossom that are well defined, perhaps a little more extravagant then Denis Dubourdieu's wines of yore. The palate is mellifluous on the entry with well-judged acidity, sensual and harmonious, poised on the entry and then fanning out gloriously with Clementine and honeyed notes that shimmer. This is an irresistible Barsac.

This is incredibly rich, with pineapple, persimmon, heather honey, creamed Jonagold apple and quince flavors. The lines are clearly drawn, with seamless acidity lending support and letting the finish both zip and drape at the same time. As pristine as a sweet wine can get.

  • Chateau Doisy-Daene, a Second Cru Classe in 1855, is located in Barsac in the Sauternes appellation. Doisy-Daene has been in the Dubourdieu family since 1924, and for more than eighty years, three generations of family vine growers have exercised their talents to produce the estate's great sweet white wines.

The composition of the soil where Doisy-Daene is grown is a thin layer of clayey sand, known as "Barsac red sand," which sits on top of a chalky subsoil. This soil type is particularly well-suited to the making of elegant and distinguished white wines.

The wine produced is defined by the essence of "noble rot": strength, balance, and subtlety. Doisy-Daene's goal is to produce a style of wine which is a great expression of the calcareous soil on which it is grown and a truly aesthetic family tradition.
