(14.8% alcohol; from a vineyard planted at an altitude of 2,100 feet): Bright ruby-red. Sexy oak complements but does not overwhelm aromas of medicinal black cherry, coffee, mocha, dark chocolate and licorice. Fat on entry, then sweet and juicy in the middle, with good intensity to the flavors of black and sour cherry and chocolate mint. Finishes long, with a lightly herbal quality nicely counterpointed by sweet mocha. With air, the fruit component faded into the background as a mineral element emerged.

A blend of 97.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2.5% Petit Verdot, the numbers on the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Sommet are similar to the 2010's, which is surprising given the differences in vintage growing conditions. The dense ruby/purple-hued 2011 reveals a chewy, lush palate, plenty of cassis, more earthiness and spice than the 2010, and a slightly more angular and tight personality. A noteworthy success in this difficult vintage, it should drink well for 10-12+ years.
