Even richer, yet no less energetic or lively, the 2011 Viognier Estate (all estate fruit, full malolactic fermentation and aged almost all in neutral oak) boasts the same ripe peach, fresh apricot, brioche and honeysuckle-style aromas that are found in the Central Coast Viognier, yet everything here is turned up a tiny notch. Full-bodied, rich and decadent, yet also perfectly balanced and elegant, it's a rock star Viognier meant for drinking over the coming year or two. Drink now-2015.

Light yellow-gold. An exotic, highly perfumed nose displays poached pear, nectarine and white flowers, with a dusty mineral overtone. Juicy and broad on entry but tighter in the mid-palate, offering penetrating citrus and orchard fruit flavors and a hint of bitter peach pit. Sexy floral and honey qualities linger on the lush, expansive, energetic finish.

  • Alban Vineyards is a California wine estate producing various Rhone style blends and varietal wine. The winery is located in Edna Valley, near Arroyo Grande in the southern corner of San Luis Obispo County.

Starting in 1985, John Alban planted grapes for other people until he bought an estate in 1989. With a focus on creating wines made from Rhone Valley varieties, Alban became one of the pioneers in the Rhone Rangers movement, and is considered one of the most influential American Rhone producers.

Within a 250-acre (100 ha) area, the vineyard area extends 60 acres (24 ha), and is planted with varieties Syrah, Viognier and Roussanne. Grenache and Roussanne are also sourced from vineyards located in the warmer Paso Robles AVA.

Among the vineyard designate wines produced are the Lorraine Vineyard, Reva Vineyard Syrah and Seymour's Vineyard Syrah. Alban also produces Pandora, a blend of Grenache and Syrah, and a botrytized dessert wine.
