Abreu's 2011 Thorevilos is wonderfully alive in the glass. Sweet floral notes lead to dark red fruit, ferrous notes and tobacco. The 2011 is surprisingly open and graceful at this stage. Will it close up, or always remain relatively accessible? Time will tell. One thing that is for sure is that the 2011 is beautiful. The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot.Author: Antonio GalloniWine Advocate | Rating: 96
As good as other cuvees from Abreu are, I am beginning to believe that my favorite vineyard in Napa Valley may be the site that David Abreu co-owns with Ric Forman, the Thorevilos Vineyard. Situated on a steep hillside behind the luxury resort of Meadowood, it is, bizarrely, not entitled to any AVA. This cuvee is normally a blend of 45%-60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30%-40% Cabernet Franc and the rest tiny dollops of Petit Verdot and Merlot. The 2011 Proprietary Red Thorevilos exhibits classic notes of white flowers, blueberries, blackberries, and hints of chocolate and wet rocks, a full-bodied mouthfeel, sweet tannin and an incredibly long finish. In a vintage that offered so many challenges, this wine's purity and full-bodied texture are remarkable. Drink it over the next 15-20 years.Author: Robert Parker

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
