75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% MourvŠdre, 5% Cinsault. 16 months in foudre. 45,000 bottles.Healthy deep crimson. Fruit seems borderline overripe but there is lots of interesting spice though plus a black pepper grace note. Very rich indeed! Like a sort of spice box assortment with some fine tannins on the end. Lots of intensity. Acid and tannins lurk. This could only be Chƒteauneuf... Its only fault is to be a tad too hot on the end.

Deep ruby. Deeply concentrated black and blue fruits on the nose and palate, with cracked pepper and floral pastille nuances adding complexity. Juicy and energetic, with superb finishing focus and floral-driven persistence. Impeccably balanced, with the depth to age effortlessly.

On another level, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape is rock-star stuff, and is probably my favorite vintage from this estate to date. Deeply colored, it boasts masculine, meaty aromas and flavors of smoked herbs, pepper, licorice, lavender, crushed rock and blackberries to go with a full-bodied, concentrated and rich style on the palate. There's ample tannin here, yet they're sweet and beautifully integrated. Give it another handful of years and drink it over the following two decades.

This takes a decidedly old-school approach with its very distinctive bay leaf and juniper notes leading the way, along with roasted mesquite and alder wood. The core of steeped black currant, roasted plum and blackberry fruit waits in reserve while the long, ganache and tar-filled finish has nice rugged grip, with a peppery echo. Should cellar wonderfully.

Lots of dark berries, but medium body. Worked well with smoked prime rib.

Le Vieux Donjon was founded by Marcel Michel, who did the first bottling at his domain in 1966. Since 1979 Marie Jose and Lucien Michel have run the property. The estate includes 14 ha of Chateauneuf du Pape, of which one ha is planted to white varieties. The vinification process is done in the traditional method with only one cuvee made of red and of white Chateauneuf du Pape. The cellars are situated on the route from Chateauneuf du Pape to Courthezon and the buildings at Avenue Saint Joseph serve as the private mansion for the family.
