Another fabulous value, the 2010 Zinfandel Old Vines is endowed with serious richness and depth throughout. Blackberry jam, black cherries, menthol, cloves, tar and licorice all come to life in this distinctly dark, brooding wine. Constantly changing in the glass, the Old Vines has a certain elusive mysteriousness to it that is sure to delight. Once again, Turley has produced a wine that punches well above its weight big time. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.

(15.5% alcohol; includes a good bit of fruit from single-vineyard sites that are not yet used to make named wines): Bright, deep ruby. Classic zin aromas of blackberry, crushed black pepper and licorice. Creamy-sweet and fat, but with a sweet-tart character contributing to the wine's superb cut and purity of fruit. Complicated by an element of wild herbs. Finishes with suave tannins, solid structure and excellent length. A very successful fusion of zinfandel's many aspects, and a terrific value.

This concentrated red is loaded with base notes of dark fruit, offering aromas of boysenberry, roasted anise and dense blackberry, with mocha, espresso and sage flavors that are wrapped in firm tannins.

Less jam and pepper than the typical old vines offering. Great fruit and structure on the second night. Hold for another year or two.

Purple in color. So jammy and smooth.

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
