Pure perfection, the amazing 2010 Pinot Noir Ma Danseuse is one of the greatest Pinots I have ever tasted ... anywhere. There are only 140 cases of this beauty, which was cropped at just over a ton of fruit per acre. It offers up notes of bouquet garni, roasted meats, black raspberries, black currants, strawberries and cherries. Deep and full-bodied with a flawless integration of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol, this glorious Pinot Noir should prove to be legendary. It will age effortlessly for 12+ years.

Ruby-red. Explosively perfumed aromas of red and dark berries, potpourri and musky underbrush. Penetrating and bright on the palate, offering sweet but sharply focused raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and an exotic floral pastille quality. A suave, silky midweight that shows outstanding sweetness and precision on the long finish. Morlet describes this wine as |more intellectual than the Le Caprice.|

Stylish and elegant, with a sophisticated mix of plum, raspberry, spice and savory herb flavors. Very complete, delicate and balanced, with a long, soothing finish.

The 2010 Pinot Noir Ma Danseuse boasts serious richness and power, but perhaps too much so as it comes across as a bit heavy. Plums, black cherries, licorice, smoke and melted road tar all flesh out in a wine that is all about intensity and opulence. The relative warmth of this vintage vis-Aÿ-vis 2011 is quite evident. If the 2010 acquires additional finesse it might merit a higher rating, but today it comes across as a bit overdone.

Peter Michael's estate vineyards (founded in 1982) are what make his wines truly exceptional. Sugarloaf Ranch sits high above Knights Valley in eastern Sonoma County, and from its rocky volcanic soil come Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Alexander Mountain Estate Vineyard, above Alexander Valley, provides additional Chardonnay. All Peter Michael wines are site-driven single vineyard bottlings, whether from the estate or the limited sourced appellations. The line-up of estate wines is supplemented by a Pinot Noir from Pisoni Vineyard called "Le Moulin Rouge."

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
