(includes 6% merlot and 2% petit verdot): Bright ruby-red. Aroma of cassis, mocha and Cuban cigar tobacco. Sweet and pliant in the mouth, with currant and black cherry fruit flavors complicated by tobacco, herbs and spicy oak. Quite suave in the middle. Finishes with firm but sweet tannins and excellent length. A very successful vintage for this bottling.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: May/June 2013Wine Spectator | Rating: 88
Offers a mix of subtly jazzy creamy oak and firm red and dark berry fruit. Young and vibrant, this features slightly astringent tannins, ending on a drying note.Author: James LaubeWine Advocate | Rating: 94

Dark purple color. Beautiful nose of plum and mocha and spice , followed by beautiful dry tannins that follow a medium to long finish. I might overuse the word but wonderfully chewy. Well done! Much less money than backus and insignia, but close in taste.Drink Dates: 2015-2030Author: flwine
Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.
