The 2010 Fontalloro is 100% Sangiovese sourced from various vineyards. It starts off with a sassy, playful personality thanks to ripe cherry and forest fruit. The complexity of the bouquet builds steadily to include mineral, herbs, anisette and dark clay. The chiseled mineral tones at the back are outstanding. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.

A mix of black cherry, black currant, tobacco and oak spice notes herald this polished red, which is balanced, but needs a year or two to pull together. Offers fine length. Sangiovese.

Good ruby-red. Plum, spicecake, balsamic herbs, licorice and a loamy nuance on the complex nose. Supple and sweet, with sneaky intensity of flavor; nicely integrated acidity lifts the flinty red berry, tobacco and licorice flavors. Suave and dense, finishing with fine-grained tannins and subtle persistence. As great as Fontalloro is in 2010, I think the Rancia Riserva is the better wine this year.

  • Felsina, for all of its current, well-deserved respect and fame, is the product of an ancient and humanitarian history. In the 12th century this estate was a roadside hospital directed by Benedictine monks who tended to the pilgrims and merchants traveling the Strata de Rancia.

The winery is located within the most south-eastern part of the Chianti Classico zone near Siena. In 1961, Domenico Poggiali purchased the property and 57 hectares of vineyards. His son-in-law, Giuseppe Mazzocolin, currently runs the estate with the assistance of renowned oenologic consultant Franco Bernabei and vineyard overseer Agostino Buracchi. Together, they have wrought a portfolio of wines that recognize the mystical world of Sangioveto.

The Cru Rancia and the Fontalloro are two of the premiere wines coming out of Tuscany today.
