(13.9% alcohol): Saturated ruby-red. A black hole of a nose, hinting at blackberry, medicinal black cherry and menthol. Quite perfumed in the mouth but youthfully tight in spite of its velvety texture, conveying terrific intensity and lift to the flavors of boysenberry, blackberry, redcurrant, minerals and black pepper. Really outstanding saline depth here. A great young Dunn Howell Mountain in the making: it's built for long aging but there's nothing hard about it in the early going.

Fabulous aromas of currants, licorice and eucalyptus. Full body with an intense backbone of acidity and tannins. Chewy but wonderfully polished. Turns to terracotta. Firm and silky. Great wine. Try it in 2018. 3,000 cases.

The flagship wine comes from their high elevation vineyards on Howell Mountain. The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain possesses stunning minerality as well as sweet notes of ink, acacia flowers, blueberries and blackberries. Thick, unctuously textured and full-bodied with terrific concentration and density, it should drink well for two decades.

There's not much to say about Randy Dunn's 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain that I haven't already said or written. A classic Howell Mountain Cabernet, the 2010 hits the palate with scents of graphite, pencil shavings, inky blue/purplish fruit, sage and spices, all backed up with swaths of broad yet impeccably balanced tannins. What a fascinating contrast it is to taste this next to David Abreu's Thorevilos as we round out the evening. The Dunn is powerful, structured and incisive, with magnificent expression of site and fabulous overall balance. Dunn's 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain will go down as one of the great wines of this vintage. Readers have to be patient, but there is no question the 2010 is a real stunner. Knowing how hard it will be to wait, I expect the 2010 will start to open up around age ten.

Very tight, dense and powerful, targeting dark berry, black licorice, fresh herb, crushed rock, and subtle floral and herb notes. The tannins grip and hang on, but the flavors push through. A textbook version.

  • Dunn Vineyards is located east of St. Helena in the town of Angwin on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley. In 1972 Randy and Lori purchased the original vineyard property. The winery was established in 1979, with the first harvest of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. In 1981, the first release offered consumers 660 cases of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Howell Mountain vineyards. In 1982, Dunn also released their first Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Currently Dunn Vineyards produces around 5000 cases of extremely age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon.
