Probably the best second wine ever made at Cos (although the 2009 should not be discounted), the 2010 Les Pagodes de Cos is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot finishing at 14% natural alcohol. This wine exhibits beautiful, silky tannins as well as sweet, rich mulberry and black currant fruit with hints of spring flowers, licorice and subtle toast. A full-bodied, opulent and -ideal- second wine, most people who have tasted it would probably agree that it is actually better than many vintages of Cos d-Estournel from the 1960s and 1970s. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

45% of production. Glistening crimson. Rich, somehow burnished fruit aromas. Very sweet and winning start and then pretty tight but in some years in the past this would have looked like a pretty good classed growth. Very slightly lean on the finish and a little tarry but well done and supple until the very end, which is a bit sudden.

Bright loganberry and blackberry fruit pumps along, while hints of licorice root, singed apple wood and charcoal chime in on the finish. Pleasantly firm, open and accessible, this is engaging and lively but a bit shy on stuffing overall. Drink now through 2023.

Bright medium ruby. Aromas of crushed blueberry, cassis and nutty oak. Wonderfully dense and sweet, with considerable complexity and a hint of superripeness to its very ripe, sweet flavors of dark berries and complementary oak. Finishes with excellent breadth and length, and thoroughly sweet, fine tannins. A great success for this bottling. For drinking over the next 10 to 12 years.

  • Classified as a Second Growth Bordeaux estate, Chateau Cos d'Estournel is without doubt, one of the top producers in the St. Estephe appellation, producing complex and intense, full-bodied wines. The chateau is often referred to as "super second," meaning that it produces wines at a quality nearing that of the First Growth houses. Cos d'Estournel wines contain a large amount of Merlot (40%), one of the highest percentages in the region, in fact; this gives the wines their wonderful fleshy, chewy texture. The chateau itself is a very unusual pagoda style building which was built by the 19th century owner Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel. The building is featured on the bottle label, making it easy to spot in the Bordeaux section. The estate also produces a second wine called Les Pagodes de Cos.
