The 2009 Octagon is a blend of 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot, aged for 13 months in French oak, about one-third new and the rest two years old. It comes in at 13. 5% alcohol. Another beauty in this issue's mini-vertical, this is youthful and vibrant, but also possessed of earthiness around the edges, a bit of game. Its complexity makes it appealing right now, even though it is rather intense on the finish. In fact, the tannins are a bit aggressive here and there, but this will easily come into balance with more cellaring. About 90 minutes of air brought it to a perfect place. Overall, this is classic Bordeaux. It just comes from Virginia.
