(100% merlot; from a crop level of 34 hectoliters per hectare; pH 3.70; 13.5% alcohol; harvested on September 22 and 25) Deep ruby-red. Perfumed, expressive aromas of cassis, blackberry liqueur and minerals lack the sheer decadent opulence of some recent vintages. Then wonderfully clean and precise, with flavors of blackberry and plum complicated by hints of Oriental spices, bitter chocolate and minerals. Firmer than usual but still silky-smooth owing to perfectly ripe tannins. Finishes long and vibrant, with a lingering note of creamy blackberry. Lucky Le Pin collectors will likely find this vintage to be more refined but a shade less opulent than usual. It reminded me a little of the 1990, and it should age just as well.

Delivering pure, unadulterated essence of raspberry throughout, this also features silky-textured tannins that build and build as the wine courses along. Lilting black tea and toasty vanilla bean aromas weave in and out. Primal and complex. Fantastic mouthfeel and length.

Medium garnet colored, the 2009 Le Pin comes charging out of the glass with exuberant notions of baked red and black cherries, mulberries and warm plums with touches of star anise, cigar box and lavender plus wafts of menthol and fragrant soil. Full-bodied and boldly fruited, it has tons of vibrant red and black fruit layers with wonderful mineral and floral sparks throughout the long, plushly textured finish.

Picked 22 and 25 Sep just after the rain (deluge 19 and 20 Sep) so 'more water in the wine'. Nice fragrance. Deckchair vintage. Lively and fresh and not obviously rich Merlot. Rain revived the vines. Very suave and lush. Very refreshing, rather feminine. Plush and flattering and really quite delicate. Polished and not at all heavy. This could be a standout ÿLe Pin, I think.

The 2009 Le Pin has a very gorgeous, mellow bouquet with plenty of red fruit infused with leather, mocha and light Cuban cigar aromas. This is not a million miles away from Petrus. The palate is medium-bodied with velvety tannin, slightly lower acidity than its peers yet remaining balanced. Gains depth and complexity towards the finish with touches of cedar and sage. I love the way this fans out and lingers in the mouth. Not a perfect wine, but an outstanding Le Pin. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

Very rich and lush, but also extremely refined, this has a lightness of touch that some top Pomerols of the vintage lack. That has a lot to do with the stunningly fine tannins that glide through the long super-fine finish. Better than ever. Drink or hold (Horizontal Tasting, London, 2019)

  • Chateau Le Pin is owned by the Thienpont family (also proprietors of Vieux Chateau Certan) and has an annual production of about 500 bottles. Le Pin's vineyards are located in the central part of the Pomerol plateau and planted with 90% Merlot grapes and the balance Cabernet Franc. The wines have a ripe, fruit-forward character that typically peak after 15 years of age. Chateau Le Pin takes its name from the presence of a single Pine tree growing on the property.
