2009 Switchback Ridge Merlot Peterson Family Vineyard
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 88
Good bright medium ruby-red. Slightly high-toned aromas of cherry pie and chocolate, with hints of rhubarb and damp earth. Fat and sweet in the mouth, showing a slightly roasted character to its black cherry and blackberry flavors. Finishes with huge, slightly drying tannins and a strong chocolatey character.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: May/June 2012Wine Spectator | Rating: 94
Rich, layered and well-structured, with floral red currant aromas and complex flavors of black cherry, anise and toasty spice that lead to big but ripe tannins.Author: James Laube

This is profound, depth, dark and dense Merlot that seems, smells and tastes like a modern Napa cabernet. This is serious stuff and easy to enjoy now with 1-hr decanting. Great fruit core of dark blue & black fruits, excellent and easy to drink tannins with long finish. This still a young wine that going to continue improvement in terms of complexities and adding nuances from top to bottom.Drink Dates: 2016-2026Author: Jito72
California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
