Good deep red. Brooding, medicinal aromas of dark cherry and licorice. A step up in density and concentration from the basic 2008 merlot bottling, youthfully medicinal today but with a distinctly chewy quality to its currant and chocolate flavors. With more stuffing to support its spine, this has the structure to reward some time in bottle.

The 2009 Merlot Mailbox Vineyard Reserve emerges from the glass with freshly cut flowers, dark cherries, mint and licorice. This is a mid-weight, translucent style of Merlot that impresses for its elegance and understated classiness. It looks to be a wine built for near and mid-term pleasure, even though it has excellent underlying structure.

I had previously recorded in my notes that this wine as rustic and tannic. Not so now. Still full bodied, but with blackberries, blueberries and a good tannic backbone. Really rounding into shape.
