Bright purple. Highly aromatic, wild scents of dark berry liqueur, spicecake, incense and crushed violet. Reminds me of syrahs that get whole-cluster vinification but all of these grapes were destemmed. Sappy, spicy and precise on the palate, offering an array of dark fruit and spice flavors and notes of candied licorice and violet. Finishes long and spicy, with excellent clarity and lingering florality.

The 2009 Syrah Il Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard Hillside Block demonstrates what Lato can do with higher quality fruit. The wine bursts onto the palate with layers of black pepper, cassis, sweet herbs, plums and black cherries. This shows marvelous cool weather firmness and minerality along with a clean, bracing finish. A blast of dark blue and black informs the awesome, explosive finish. The 100% new oak barrels are integrated beautifully. This is a fabulous wine from Paul Lato.
