    48% of the crop, picked 3 days earlier than usual because the grapes were so ripe. Average yield 45 hl/ha.ÿ88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot.Very dark indeed. Very Mouton. Very exotic, minerals, spice and old ladies' handbags. Lovely topnotes. Real excitement on the nose here. Obviously great density but lots of grace notes. Lovely palate entry and glossy texture. Then again drier and a little more astringent than its peers on the finish. A difficult wine to mark because the nose is SO gorgeous! I think it may require just a bit more patience than some. Just seemed in a slightly low register when I tasted it. All the Mouton wines had ruder tannins than usual in 2009.

    Opaque, almost impenetrable purple-ruby. Closed nose hints at ripe dark plum, cassis, violet, coffee, minerals and ink. Opulent flavors of blackcurrant, minerals and herbs are pure and clean, with harmonious acidity lifting and extending them on the very long, rich, suave finish. This wine has improved considerably since the Primeurs . In fact, this is even more true of the 2010, which makes me think that Mouton may now require extra patience and leeway when it's tasted during the spring following the harvest. Another stellar wine for this property. (ID)

    Tasted at the Mouton-Rothschild vertical in London, the 2009 Mouton-Rothschild is a stunning wine. But you know that already. Here I remarked upon its deep co lour vis-a-vis recent vintages. The aromatics have |firmed up| since I last tasted it, takes a little encouragement from the glass, and then its sheer purity washes across the senses. Blackberry and cold stone notes, bilberry and just a touch of graphite that was less noticeable than before. The palate remains weighty in the mouth, extraordinarily dense and yet still utterly composed and beautifully focused, segueing towards an intense spicy finish. I noticed Philippe Dhalluim almost laughing at the quality of this 2009, such is its pedigree and yet will it eclipse the 2010 Mouton-Rothschild? Time will tell. Magnificent. Tasted May 2016.

    The 2009 Mouton Rothschild is exceptionally beautiful. A huge, powerful wine, the 2009 possesses stunning richness and radiance, with plenty of underlying structure to support all of that exuberance. Smoke, grilled herbs, tobacco and incense give the 2009 much of its exotic, captivating personality. Seamless, opulent, yet with terrific freshness, the 2009 is sure to thrill those fortunate to own it for several decades. In a word: dazzling. The blend is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Merlot. Harvest took place between September 23 and October 6 in a year marked with dry weather, higher than average temperatures and generous sunshine.

    The pureness of fruit in this on the nose is phenomenal, with crushed currants and cassis. It's deep, so deep. Also some foie gras. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and an insanely decadent finish, with meat, game and dark fruits. Goes on for minutes. Decadent and turns to dark fruits cassis and licorice. Warm and voluptuous wine. 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Merlot. Try in 2020.

    This is pure, unadulterated Cabernet, with a gorgeously creamy mouthfeel to the beam of cassis that's backed by extra layers of cherry eau de vie, red licorice and raspberry ganache. Obviously dense but amazingly supple, with terrific length supported by a classic, iron-fueled spine. This has power if it needs it, but it's all about length. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Chateau Mouton-Rothschild is a First Growth Bordeaux estate located in the village of Paulliac. The chateau was originally known as Chateau Brane-Mouton while in the possession of the Barons de Brane, but was given its current name by Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853. The current owner is Philippine de Rothschild, Nathaniel's great-great granddaughter. Mouton-Rothschild is known for being the first estate to initiate complete chateau-bottling in 1924 and for being the only estate from the 1855 classification to be reclassified (upgraded to First Growth in 1973). Mouton's bottles are unique in that each label is designed by a famous artist of the day. This feature makes Mouton-Rothschild especially attractive to collectors. Not to be confused with the grand vin, Mouton also makes a generic Bordeaux called Mouton Cadet, which is dramatically lower in price and highly distributed. The estate also produces a dry Bordeaux Blanc called Ailes d'Argent.

Chateau Mouton-Rothschild is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, with annual production varying between 20-25,000 cases. The vineyards are comprised of gravel on a subsoil of marl and clay. Mouton is one of the last Medoc estates to ferment its wine in oak vats. Maturation is done in new oak casks. Mouton is a complex wine with an exotic character and powerful tannins. The bouquet features black currants, cedar, pencil lead, licorice, and spice. Younger vintages appear opaque or deep purple, while older vintages tend to show more garnet. Some of the best vintages of Mouton-Rothschild include 1945, 1953, 1982, 1986, 1995, 1989 and 2002.
