2009 BOND Matriarch
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91
Good saturated ruby-red. Very fresh aromas of black raspberry, licorice and toffee. Lovely energy to the classic dark berry, licorice and graphite flavors. Impressively concentrated for this bottling and showing considerable early sex appeal, especially considering that it was bottled barely a month prior to my visit. Finishes with noteworthy lift and length.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: May/June 2012Wine Spectator | Rating: 93
Rich and dense, chewy too, this red offers a dense core of dried currant, dark berry, fresh-turned earth, black licorice and roasted herb notes. Ends with grainy tannins.Author: James LaubeWine Advocate | Rating: 91
The 2009 Matriarch opens with a burst of dark red fruit, flowers, licorice and tobacco. It boasts remarkable inner perfume, soft, silky tannins and fabulous overall balance. I especially like the way the 2009 fleshes out on the finish. The depth and roundness of the fruit makes the 2009 very appealing, even at this young stageAuthor: Antonio Galloni

A bit green initially, but opened up quickly and showed a bit more fruit. Mouth drying tannins make this somewhat harsh on the finish.Author: Jeffrey M989

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
