    (a blend of 87% cabernet sauvignon, 9% merlot, 2% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; pH 3.79; 13.3% alcohol; represents a stringent 36% selection) Good full ruby-red. Pure, ripe aromas of cassis, graphite and cedar, lifted by floral and mineral high notes. Dense and amazingly concentrated yet light on its feet, with compelling, extremely pure flavors of spicy blackcurrant, tobacco leaf and minerals. The extremely long, slow-building and wonderfully fine-grained finish offers an exhilarating combination of power and sweetness. This comes across as quite backward today yet is anything but austere. A real essence of Margaux's great terroir, and one of my favorite wines of the vintage. As I walked to the parking lot with Pontallier after the tasting, he said to me, |If people don't think this is one of the greatest wines I have ever made, then it means I haven't really understood anything in the last 30 years spent making wine.|

    A brilliant offering from the Mentzelopoulos family, once again their gifted manager, Paul Pontallier, has produced an uncommonly concentrated, powerful 2009 Chateau Margaux made from 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest primarily Merlot with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. As with most Medocs, the alcohol here is actually lower (a modest 13.3%) than most of its siblings-. Abundant blueberry, cassis and acacia flower as well as hints of charcoal and forest floor aromas that are almost Burgundian in their complexity are followed by a wine displaying sweet, well-integrated tannins as well as a certain ethereal lightness despite the wine's overall size. Rich, round, generous and unusually approachable for such a young Margaux, this 2009 should drink well for 30-35+ years.

    The Cabernet was so good, it was easy to decide the blend for the grand vin -including 87% Cabernet Sauvignon. Blended early Feb. 2009 reminds Pontallier of 1990 because of its lushness. The grand vin was 36% of the crop. pH 3.79, TA 3.3 g/lVery dark crimson. Sumptuous nose - just gorgeous. So fine, so ripe but with lovely freshness too. Margaux finesse. Truly a wonderful nose. The nose is really the thing already. Will it ever be difficult to drink? ÿBreadth across the palate. Just wonderfully relaxed and fresh and beautifully balanced. Soft tannins on the finish, very very long. We debate whether the texture is cashmere or silk.ÿ

    The nose is out of this world, with lilacs, currants, blackberries, and blueberries. Full-bodied, with super silky tannins and savory fruit and amazing flavors of fine leather, blueberries, and sandalwood. The quality of the tannins are amazing, with creamy texture and bright acidity on the end. Such classic and classicism. Delicacy. Lasts for minutes on the palate. This is 13.2% alcohol. Best Margaux in bottle yet... will 2010 be as great? Try it in 2020.

    Understated in feel, but not for lack of depth or length, as this has beguiling and well-defined notes of black tea, sandalwood, singed vanilla bean and Kenya AA coffee, backed by gorgeously silky plum, blackberry and cassis fruit flavors. But the finish is so balanced, suave, gentle and long, it would be easy to overlook just how much range there is here. So be patient and let cellaring do its thing.

  • Chateau Margaux is one of the five First Growths ranked in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The neo-Palladian style chateau was built in the 18th century by architect Louis Combes for the Marquis de la Colonilla. Chateau Margaux has been well regarded in history and stands among Thomas Jefferson's favorite chateaux. Since 1977, the estate has been directed by the Mentzelopoulos family with winemaking team director Paul Pontallier, cellar master Jean Grangerou and consulting oenologist Emile Peynaud. The vineyards are primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), with the balance composed of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. In addition to the chateau's grand vin, the estate produces a second label called Pavillon Rouge de Chateau Margaux and Pavillon Blanc de Chateau Margaux, a white made from Sauvignon Blanc. Chateau Margaux's finest vintages include 1900, 1928, 1953, 1961, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1990, 1996, 2000, 2003, and 2005.

    Margaux is often considered the most "feminine" of the First Growths. It is sensuous with fine tannins that give it a sense of clarity. The wine has dark berry aromas such as boysenberry or blackberries. The bouquet is characterized by ripe black currants, spicy vanilla and violets. A strong minerality is often found in the lengthy finish.
