(fermented with 25% whole clusters): Vivid ruby. Red berry and cherry aromas are complicated by dried rose and Asian spices, along with an exotic hint of apricot. Expansive and expressive in the mouth, offering sweet raspberry and cherry-cola flavors enlivened by tangy acidity. The cherry and spice notes linger on the finish with very good tenacity and clarity. This one should reward at least few more years of patience.Author: Josh RaynoldsIssue: May/June 2011Wine Spectator | Rating: 93
Supple and immediately pleasing, with tasty plum, wild berry and floral scents. Smooth-textured and full-bodied, gaining structure and depth and unfolding in a graceful, supple manner.Author: James LaubeWine Advocate | Rating: 92
The 2009 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard shows the exuberance of this site. Black cherries, flowers, pine, menthol and violets build nicely in the glass as the wine shows off its personality. The aromas and flavors continue to grow in intensity all the way through to an elegant finish layered with persistent saline notes. The Garys' was partially vinified in oak, with 17% whole clusters.Author: Antonio Galloni

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
