A rich, fleshy style, offering lots of pastis-soaked plum, blackberry and currant fruit at the core, backed by ganache and singed juniper notes that add texture and length on the finish, with a terrific iron spine. Should age nicely.

Opaque ruby. Smoky raspberry, cherry and violet aromas are lifted and sharpened by a suave Indian spice note. Sappy and broad in the mouth, offering sweet red and dark berry flavors and a touch of fruitcake. Warm yet lively, finishing with excellent thrust, supple tannins and persistent spiciness. Philippe Guigal noted that he won't be surprised if this wine never really shuts down.

The 2009 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde should turn out to be just as good as the 2007 (and possibly better) . This unctuously textured wine exhibits sweet black raspberry and black cherry fruit notes intermixed with notions of coffee, new saddle leather, roasted meat and herbs. Richly fruity, spicy and already attractive, it should evolve nicely for 12-15 years.

The Brune and Blonde blends were tasted separately. The Brune blend:Attractive spicy fruit and freshness. Fine tannins and polish. Dry end but really light and classic C“te-R“tie-ish! Menthol. The Blonde blend:Not immediately obvious that this is a huge step up from the St-Joseph just tasted. Fine and fresh. Lovely round tannins.

Rather light and elegant, with mineral overtones balanced by rather generous dark, brambly fruit. Shows plenty of typicity and should age well. An afforable entry level to the genre. Will buy again.

Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is synonymous with quality all along the scale, from the humble Cotes-du-Rhone to the Big Three - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque.
