Medium to deep garnet in color, the 2009 Grand-Puy-Lacoste opens with a nose of sweaty leather, damp earth, baked cherries and dried mulberries with touches of fried herbs, black olives and cast iron pan. Medium-bodied, firm and chewy, this is a more elegantly styled 2009 with provocative herbal sparks and a ferrous finish.

The 2009 Grand Puy Lacoste is one of the great vintages from this estate in the modern era. It storms from the glass with scents of blackberry, undergrowth, cedar and mint, retaining the classicism of GPL. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity. Very harmonious with a gorgeous, lithe, graphite infused finish that lingers in the mouth. Bon vin. Tasted blind at BI Wines & Spirits' Ten Year On tasting.

Dark and delicately spicy this a very complete medium-full bodied 2009 that's not a jot too ripe or too firm. Beautiful balance through the long polished finish. Drink or hold. (Horizontal Tasting, London, 2019)

This is a step up, with ample black currant confiture and roasted fig notes allied to a racy graphite and iron spine. Very sleek through the finish, despite its heft, with a long finish filled with cassis bush and tobacco. Best from 2013 through 2025. 15,000 cases made. — JM

  • Located on the left bank of the Gironde River, a few miles from the town of Pauillac, Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste (also known as Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste-Saint-Guirons) is a Fifth Growth classified Bordeaux wine that continually outperforms its classification. The vineyards cover over 90 hectares growing primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. Grand-Puy-Lacoste's wines are powerful, with distinct tannic structure, and rich blackcurrant and cassis notes which are the hallmarks of a good Pauillac. Cabernet Sauvignon is king at Grand-Puy-Lacoste, as the deep gravel topsoil with a limestone base is ideally suited for growing the grape. Cabernet is also what gives the wines their wonderful structure, and aging potential. The estate's second wine is called Lacoste-Borie.
