Sleek, rich and layered, presenting tiers of melted black licorice, dark berry, mocha, exotic spices and seductive oak. This is still tight and rambunctious, but remains beautifully centered and is sure to gain.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate has closed down quite a bit in bottle since I tasted it last year. The depth and density of the fruit is there, as is the characteristic Oakville spiciness, but the sheer pleasure the wine showed twelve months ago is hiding behind a serious wall of tannin. Violets, mint, sweet red cherries and cinnamon literally burst from the glass in this beautifully delineated, vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon. The powerful tannins need time to soften, but the wine has serious potential. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

Hands down the best best wine I have ever had the opportunity to taste. A 100 pt in my book. Better then the insignia 2004 a very close second.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
