    (80% roussanne, 15% grenache blanc and the rest the other permitted white varieties): Light gold. Richer and more pungent than the 2010 version, offering an array of floral, orchard fruit and spice scents and a hint of candied ginger. Fleshy and expansive, with very good depth to its pear, peach and honeydew flavors. A note of iodine adds an exotic touch to the long, sappy finish.

    80% Rousssanne with small amounts of Grenache Blanc, Picardan, Bourboulenc and Clairette. 20% fermented in small oak barrels. Gently aromatic, a herbal note but nothing in the least herbaceous. Almonds and a delicate note of pear and honey. Full bodied, pears and just-ripe apricots but quite restrained and highly structured at the moment though there is a creamy texture not apparent in the Coudoulet. Really quite a grip but no bitterness of phenolics. Such a baby and yet it is harmonious and the depth is there already and then a stony mineral aftertaste. (JH)

    A bold, broad style, with gorgeous green fig, pear and melon flavors laced with heather honey and glazed peach notes on the rich finish. Extra persimmon, hazelnut and brioche notes fill in the background, giving added dramatic effect.

    The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is an amazingly open-knit, full-bodied, honeyed white boasting tons of orange marmalade, quince, white currant and creme brulee liqueur-like notes, stunning purity and richness, and a fabulous full-bodied, unctuously textured mouthfeel. Its richness is off the charts, and the wine offers a completely contrasting style with the more delineated, zesty 2010. I would opt for drinking the 2009 over the next 4-5 years.

  • Chateau Beaucastel, run by the Perrin brothers, is regarded as one of the best estates of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. At 131 hectares of vineyards, it is also one of the largest estates in the region. It is atypical of the appellation in its production techniques. It is one of three estates to produce and vinify all 13 grapes permitted under the regulations of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Also, unlike most estates, Beaucastel prefers to use as much Mourvedre in its blend as Grenache. As one of the first estates to practices organic viticulture, Chateau Beaucastel is often criticized for the influence of Brettanomyces, yeast that may contribute animalistic flavors to the wine. They are also controversial for their vinification practice of rapidly heating the incoming must in order to kill bacteria and extract color and flavor from the skins. After maturation in oak casks, the wine is bottled with light fining and no filtration. The house produces several cuvees, the grand vin known as Chateau Beaucastel. Their other wines include Hommage a Jean Perrin, Chateau Beaucastel Blanc, Roussanne Vieilles Vignes. Good values can be had by their Cotes du Rhone, Coudoulet de Beaucastel and their negociant line under the name Vieille Ferme.
