Marked by an alluring herbaceous aroma, with touches of sage and dill, this firms and focuses on a tight beam of currant and dried berry fruit, accented by notes of black licorice, black tea and spice. Gains depth and length. For all its flavor, this remains elegant and graceful on the palate.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is surprisingly powerful. It has closed down quite a bit since I tasted it last year, which is a great sign for the future. Black fruit, cassis, licorice and spice box all jump from the glass in an intense Cabernet full of personality. The 2009 is loaded with tremendous potential, but its best days are still at least a few years away. This full-bodied, rich, enveloping wine is striking today. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.

A nice wine which I think will continue to evolve. A lot of old school herbaceous flavors with an elegant structure, but not really my style. This is a wine I wanted to love, but only like.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
