($45; 16% alcohol) Dark red. Dark berries, licorice, violet and incense on the nose and palate, lifted by a peppery nuance. Rich, peppery and deep, with lovely intensity of flavor and a distinctly layered quality to its sweet, powerful fruit. At once chewy and focused, this heady zinfandel fans out impressively on the back end, finishing with big, ripe, chewy tannins and impressive energy. (My bottles of the Mead Ranch Atlas Peak and Tofanelli Vineyard Napa Valley zinfandels were corked.)

More structured with more obvious tannin, minerality, and graphite notes is the blue and black fruit-filled, dark purple-hued 2008 Zinfandel Dragon Vineyard. From Howell Mountain, it is one of the strongest Zinfandels produced by Turley. The wine exhibits lots of structure as well as considerable aging potential for a Zinfandel (10+ years). It offers loads of mineral-laced blue and black fruits combined with notions of new saddle leather, crushed rocks, flowers, and berries.

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.
