  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89

(15.5% alcohol): Good medium ruby. Musky aromas of black raspberry and dark chocolate. Fat, sweet and round, with smoky earth tones nicely complementing black raspberry fruit. A hint of eucalyptus provides lift. An essentially soft cabernet with plenty of extract. Finishes with building tannins and a slight alcoholic warmth. Hourglass is seeking to reduce the alcohol levels in its wines while keeping phenolic material, and plans to use shade cloth to moderate the direct sunshine on the fruit.

Smooth-textured, with complex black cherry, plum, anise and savory herb touches, this full-bodied effort is elegant and stylish, gaining depth and complexity on the finish, where the flavors turn delicate and linger.

The well-made 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueline (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) also sees 30% new oak. It offers up classic notes of black currants, licorice, Christmas fruitcake, tobacco leaf and damp earth. This medium-bodied, forward Cabernet Sauvignon can be drunk over the next 10-12 years.

Proprietor Jeff Smith has developed Hourglass Cabernet into one of the most anticipated releases each year since its debut in 1997. Winemaker (and Jeff's fellow band mate) Bob Foley gets the most out of this vineyard, named for its location at the narrowest point of the Napa Valley, just north of St. Helena. Production is consistently under 1000 cases.
